The Origin Story

What began as a collection of hand-knitted baby blankets has evolved into a globally recognised knitwear label, grounded in provenance and driven by purpose.

Vanessa’s career began in high fashion, working with houses including Valentino, Armani, and Dior. Inspired by her great-grandmother’s knitting and a Merino blanket passed down through generations, she recognised the unique ability of wool to carry both legacy and meaning.

In 2017, she launched her first collection of heirloom baby blankets using Australian-grown Merino wool. These early pieces laid the foundation for a brand defined by craftsmanship, material integrity, and long-term thinking.

Grown in Australia, Crafted in Italy

Vanessa Bell is rooted in Australia and realised through global craftsmanship.

Vanessa now grows superfine Merino wool at Emu Creek in Walcha, New South Wales, one of Australia’s most respected fibre-producing regions. As an RWS-certified grower, the wool is grown using regenerative practices that support soil health, biodiversity, and long-term land stewardship.

The current collection is crafted in Italy using RWS-certified yarns from Tollegno 1900 and Lanecardate. Each garment is produced by Maglificio Pini, a family-run atelier renowned for its expertise in ethical knitwear manufacturing.

Vanessa chose to partner with Italian makers to honour generations of technical knowledge and preserve the tradition of fine craftsmanship.

The long-term vision is to integrate wool grown under the Vanessa Bell banner into future collections bringing the story fully from farm to garment.
